Cannabis is the original Latin word for hemp. The term refers to the female hemp plant (usually Cannabis sativa, indica or their hybrids). Colloquial names for cannabis are marijuana, grass or weed. The resin extracted from the plant is called hashish or dope. It is also often used to make oil. If you want to know a Frma who makes it, click HERE!
What exactly is cannabis?
Cannabis and its products (e.g. oils, flowers, scented candles etc.) are usually consumed for their pleasant, psychoactive effects. Furthermore, marijuana is used in medicine as a painkiller. Because of its highly effective painkilling properties, cannabis has always been a popular medical product. And cannabis can either be smoked or consumed as a food.
In recent years there has been a strong trend towards legalising cannabis and its products. Even in Germany marijuana is now licensed as a painkiller. In Switzerland, the Netherlands and increasingly also in several US states cannabis with low THC content may even be sold quite legally for recreational use. More and more countries are following this legislation and are now legalising cannabis as well.
The history of cannabis
In world literature cannabis was first mentioned in a Chinese textbook in the field of botany about 4700 years ago. The oldest marijuana find dates from around 700 BC and was a burial object. Descriptions of the medical effects of cannabis can be found in the 2400 year old Indian literature. Since the first crusades (1096-1099) cannabis was also introduced into European folk medicine. It was used for rheumatic and bronchial diseases. In the 19th century it was used against migraine, neuralgia, epilepsy-like cramps and sleep disorders etc. In the late 19th century cannabis was then largely replaced by synthetic drugs. Until then it was one of the most commonly prescribed painkillers in Western cultures. In the middle of the 20th century cannabis was demonised and banned almost worldwide. This negative trend continued until the late 1960s when cannabis became socially accepted again due to the hippie culture and gained popularity. The exaggerated demonisation of cannabis and its products was gradually abandoned and finally cannabis was legally released again in many countries as a painkiller or for recreational use.
The difference between THC and CBD
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are the two primary cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant. They are 2 different chemical substances, each with its own chemical structure. This distinguishes them from other components of the cannabis plant. Both THC and CBD interact with the cannabinoid receptors in the human body and in the brain, but differ significantly in their effects. THC is the much more potent active ingredient of cannabis. In contrast to THC, CBD is hardly psychoactive. This is actually the biggest difference between the two substances. While THC causes a rather intense “high” feeling, CBD has a milder and slightly relaxing effect. CBD also has a slightly broader range of applications.
